Grant Sommerfeld is a senior facilities management and operations officer with an entrepreneurial spirit and more than 17 years of leadership experience in corporate service roles, specializing in facilities management. He’s managed budgets of up to $41.5 million, led departments of up to 750 people, and overseen $250 million in capital construction since 2014. His multi-sector experience includes healthcare, government, and higher education. Since 2005 he has served as the Associate Vice President, Facilities Management Mount Royal University (2014-2022), Division Manager, Facilities Management, Corporate Properties, City of Calgary (2011-2014), and as the Director, Facilities and Engineering Services, Saskatoon Health Region (2005-2011) His credentials include an MBA from the University of Saskatchewan, three professional certifications in facilities management and one in management consulting. He’s studied executive leadership, strategy, and strategic execution at top schools, including Cornell, the London School of Economics, INSEAD, and HEC Paris. Grant’s leadership style is centred on putting people first and creating positive and safe environments where team members can innovate and perform to their full potential. While he’s proud of his accomplishments in facilities management, he’s equally dedicated to the strategic planning and execution process and unlocking the strategic possibilities that lay untapped within corporate support groups such as facilities management. He’s initiated numerous collaborations with professional staff, faculty, and healthcare providers to leverage untapped FM capabilities and resources in unique projects that added strategic and operational value in new ways benefitting the organization and its clients and customers. Grant can be found reading fiction and history, playing chess (poorly), or finding peace and tranquillity in long-distance kayaking when he's not working.
